RED CLOUD, Neb. (KSNB) - The National Willa Cather Center of Red Cloud is pleased to announce the opening of Picture This by artist Sammy Lynn of rural Hastings. Lynn, a longtime resident of neighboring Adams County, specializes in batik, pencil, and pastels. Her creative work will be on display in the gallery of NWCC’s Red Cloud Opera House July 16 through Sept. 9. The exhibit will be available for in-person viewing Thursdays through Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in conjunction with NWCC’s July 16 phased reopening. The exhibit will also be available online. There is no charge to view the exhibit.
Nebraska scapes and people are two important subjects for Lynn, who draws inspiration from nature, history, and old photographs. Her journey to becoming an artist was not always easy. “I have always loved making artwork, but the schools I attended did not offer art,” the Oklahoma native said of her formative years. “As an adult, I attended many classes and workshops.” In 1982, Lynn and two other artists formed a group called “Sink, Inc. & Co.” “Our artwork focused on women’s daily lives,” said Lynn. “It was a time when it was difficult for women to be recognized in the art world.” Now, all three actively show their work with various art groups, galleries, and competitions.
Recalling her early days as an artist, Lynn said, “Batik is a messy business, and my studio at home was also known as the kitchen and laundry room. My main job as a farm wife was cooking, but batik and cooking in a small kitchen were a difficult combination.” Eventually, Lynn opened a studio above the Strand Theatre in Hastings, thinking she would be there for a month. The experimental studio away from home turned into a 39-year stint. This past summer, she completed the move to a specially built studio on the farm where she lives south of Hastings.
Also on display at the Red Cloud Opera House is Celebrating Women, a fiber arts exhibit located in the second-floor auditorium. It is also free of charge to the public. Highlighting the
accomplishments of women through the decades, this exhibit was created to celebrate the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted American women the right to vote. Featuring the work of 14 fiber artists, this exhibit celebrates the landmark event by honoring admirable and groundbreaking women and their experiences. The exhibit, which runs through August, was co-curated by Dianne Duncan Thomas and Cynthia Levis of the Midwest Fiber Arts Alliance.
In addition to on-site viewing, Picture This and Celebrating Women are available online.
Beginning July 16, the NWCC bookstore and gallery will be open Thursdays through Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Contact the National Willa Cather Center at their web site or by phone at (402) 746-2653 for more information.
