Ottawa artist Jeremy Johnson went through many ups and downs after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor a decade ago.
He acknowledged Friday each individual has their fair share of struggles, and he wants to do what he can to help.
For Johnson, 40, his contribution comes naturally through his art.
He kicked off The Hope Project on Friday at the Jordan block in Ottawa. He is selling raffle tickets to win one of his signature art pieces he created in 2017. The proceeds will go to the Ottawa Community Food Basket.
The piece spells the word “hope.”
Each letter in the piece carries significance. The arrow in the “H” represents rising up. The large heart is for the letter “O,” and it represents all hearts uniting. The “P” with an eye represents opening eyes with awareness, wisdom and acknowledgement. The “E” is left open and represents encouragment and open-minded opportunities.
Residents also are invited to sign the piece in different colors, as another symbol of the community uniting.
The artwork will be on display at JJ’s Pub, 104 W. Main St., this week for people to sign it, or to buy raffle tickets.
The fundraiser aims to raise $10,000 for the local food pantry.
Commissioner Marla Rodriguez was on hand Friday with Johnson at the Jordan block. She is helping him organize the fundraiser.
The artwork will move to other businesses until it is raffled in September, Rodriguez said. Any business wanting to play host to the work can contact Rodriguez at mrodriguez@cityofottawa.org or send a message to The Hope Project on Facebook. She said the goal is to gain attention to the cause by moving the piece to different businesses as well as bring some foot traffic to businesses for those interested.
Johnson said he has created different pieces of art, but they have one common theme: “They are all inspirational and bring people together.”
