Who are you?
My name is Cynthia Marks. I was a high school art teacher for 35 years and Elkhart, Indiana. I have bachelor’s and master’s degree, my first degree was in jewelry design and metalsmithing, with a 
minor in ceramics. But, I also did a lot of drawing and painting and then I got a master’s degree in drawing. I’ve sort of combined my love of drawing and painting and ceramics to create clay, where the emphasis is on drawing and painting on the surface of the clay.
How did you get started?
I think it was when I had a fifth-grade art teacher that paid a lot of attention to me. Yeah, I was a kid that nobody paid much attention to I wasn’t brilliant and I wasn’t extremely talented but she saw something and I loved her and wanted to be just like her.
What are your favorite Mediums?
Clay is my favorite and I love to draw, I love to paint, but I really love clay.
What Inspires you?
My work is heavily influenced by art history and form. Sometimes when I’m getting ready to start a new body of work I usually try to make 15 pieces at a time. A good friend that taught at Goshen College one time told me never to look at ceramics to create ceramics, so I’ll look at French paintings from the 19th century, or I just get on a jag and go with it.
What do you hope people get from your pieces?
I hope they enjoy it. People always tell me “Oh your work is so different and it’s so colorful”. I think what I like the best, is I like the relationships I’ve made over the years with people that have purchased my work or they know of my work. The relationships that are created by doing what I love.
