Dallas artist Desireé Vaniecia digs into her family history in her first solo show - The Dallas Morning News

2020 has been a surprisingly rewarding year for Dallas-based artist Desireé Vaniecia.

This spring, Vaniecia received the Dallas Museum of Art’s Arch and Anne Giles Kimbrough Award, given annually to Texas artists under 30. The funding allowed her to complete a series of new paintings for her first solo show at Conduit Gallery, titled “Been on My Way.”

Consisting of five large-scale portraits of women and a suite of smaller, object-oriented paintings, the exhibition is the culmination of a three-year study of cultural representations of the Black female form and maternal influences in the artist’s own life.

Vaniecia was inspired to investigate her familial history after seeing a portrait of her grandmother as a young woman.

“My grandmother was a teenage mom, and the photograph was taken when she was about 24,” Vaniecia says. “It made me think about the evolution of our family and our legacy. It’s about those moments in life where you change things for yourself that change the trajectory of your life and your family.”

At 7 feet tall, the portraits are larger than life, executed in a color-blocked style in bold shades of orange, yellow, black and blue. Each is based on a particular woman in Vaniecia’s life, the poses and titles alluding to individual attributes and memories recalled by the artist. The figures are dressed in a contemporary athletic style that emphasizes their strength, but the posturing is casual and timeless, ranging from contemplative to statuesque.

Accompanying the portraits is a series of paintings of domestic objects culled from Vaniecia’s past: a hot oil comb, a paper grocery bag, a rotary telephone.

They speak to the power of daily routines and quiet moments in shaping our familial and individual legacies, as they become memories and traditions passed on from one generation to the next.
