An artist in Rhode Island is hoping to make kids in his East Providence neighborhood smile and to lift his neighbors spirits with his art. His media of choice? Spray paint.
Paul Morse said he learned graffiti while he was in the sixth grade, according to ABC News 20 in Providence. “Trains, planes, automobiles, I’ve done it all.”
Due to his art of choice, he had gotten into trouble with the law from time to time when he was young, saying “I never got into big trouble for it. but my parents had to pay a few fines.”
He paints murals for commission now. “It’s fun man, I enjoy it, it’s kind of self-expression, it’s therapeutic,” he said. “I go to the gym, but it doesn’t touch the creative side.”
He came up with the idea of painting a mural for the neighborhood while outside cooking on his grill one day. He noticed his neighbor Judy’s garage and asked her if he could paint one of the walls. “She told me yes. I promised her if I didn’t have a mural up, I would paint it its normal color.”
That first mural had a Halloween-theme. With two schools nearby, Morse said, “With COVID, ya gotta go for the walks, so when they come up the street, they all stop [right there] and come down and take pictures, cause I’m always changing it.”
He has now painted a snowy one for Christmas with the Grinch, Santa, Frosty the Snowman and a 2020 graphic with a mask.
“People drive by and stop while I’m painting. They’ll beep, wave and say ‘Can we take a picture in front of it?’” said Morse.
He has been told that students in the nearby schools are intrigued by his art. “I’m willing to give classes for free. I wouldn’t even want to charge them.”
Although Morse just had knee replacement surgery, he does hopes to feel well enough to paint a mural for the New Year.
