The Esquire Tavern hosted a night unlike any other for the San Antonio arts scene, not only in celebration of their 87th business anniversary, but also in remembrance of a figure in the performance and arts community lost too soon.
S.T. Shimi - whose given name was Thanalakshmi Subramaniam - performed under the name Black Orchid as a burlesque dancer. She was tragically killed on December 2, after being struck by a car after exiting a bus on Blanco Road.
The night paid tribute to her vivid life as not only a performer, but a multidisciplinary artist, writer and arts educator. She was also known for her passion for progressive politics and social justice.
The Tavern will be hosting a COVID safe online holiday show, which will include footage of Shimi's last performance. All proceeds raised through the groups PayPal will also go to the fund in her name.
