AKRON, Ohio – Black artists in greater Akron are invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the Black Artist Guild, which is intended to provide networking and support for Black artists living or working in the region.
The public meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Feb. 3. To register, visit ABAGuild.org.
The idea for the Black Artist Guild was suggested by local artists Dara Harper and Diane Johnson during a community forum in the summer of 2019 as part of Akron’s cultural planning process.
“As a Black artist, it’s easy to feel isolated from others and unconnected to opportunities in our region,” said Harper. “We want the Black Artist Guild to be a solution to the data we see and the experiences we know.”
As part of Akron’s two-year cultural planning process, which resulted in the release of the Akron Cultural Plan in 2020, the city and nonprofit ArtsNow interviewed hundreds of residents and held community meetings in which people expressed what they want to see in the city’s arts scene through 2035. One of the findings was that 97% of residents who participated indicated that equity must be a priority in the local creative and cultural sector.
“In Akron, we believe that people of all ages, races, genders, orientations, religions, abilities, means and backgrounds must have access to and participate in the making of a thriving cultural scene,” the Akron Cultural Plan reads. “We must build more equitable practices so that all Akron residents and guests can co-create the future of Akron’s arts and culture.”
Included within the first priority in the cultural plan is the need for organizational support for historically marginalized groups. The plan lists the Black Artists Guild as a way to support Black and African-American artists in Akron and Summit County.
The Black Artist Guild has received funding from the Knight Foundation and administrative support from ArtsNow. The founding members – Harper, Johnson and Dominic Moore-Dunson, a dancer and choreographer – are planning for the Feb. 3 meeting to include a discussion of their founding principles and plans to impact the community.
“Though we hope to build the Guild as a home base and a place to connect and commune with fellow Black artists in Akron, the details on how we do that are ours to co-create,” Moore-Dunson said. “At our first public meeting, we’re not presenting a concept to the community – we’re building an idea together.”
The group is seeking to collaborate and receive input from Black artists in the Akron area about how to best network, advocate and educate. For more information, visit ABAGuild.org.
