IPSWICH — Anne Babson’s front lawn at 24 Fellows Road is a mix of store, gallery and squirrel playground.
Framed with grapevines, her art mostly hangs from a tree.
Some larger pieces sit on the ground, but the large maple tree with its low-hanging branches makes a great outdoor hanging space. “The tree is so perfect for this,” Babson said.
Babson picks the wild grapevine and molds the stems before decorating them. Some of her works have found objects inside such as lanterns and dry flowers.

Others have nut garlands but Babson readily concedes the problem with those. “I’ve gone through quite a few with the squirrels,” she laughed. “All I see left are little shredded pieces of the fishing line.”
Even if there is no food, the squirrels enjoy using the art to get around. Babson said she will be outside when, “All of a sudden you’ll start to see one start to spin around like crazy.”
Babson keeps the display fresh by changing out the sculptures and the objects inside regularly. In summer, she adds hanging plants to the mix. “I’ve got people coming by to see the changes every day,” she said. She also lights the display up so it looks nice at night.
A lifelong resident of Ipswich, Babson worked in a number of jobs including a stint as a commercial clammer. But she has always been attracted to arts and crafts, she said, and her passion turned into a business this year.
If people stop by and fall in love with a piece but without the artist present, they can pay into an honor-system box left on the lawn.
If Babson is around, visitors are welcome to chat and walk around and, she quipped, “Prices are negotiable.”
