Last October, the most recent time the Littleton Fine Arts Guild was able to highlight an exhibiting artist at the Depot Art Gallery, Brigitte Runnalls of Castle Rock was named “Artist of the Month” and had a display of her work featured in the back room of the downtown Littleton gallery, housed in a historic Santa Fe Railroad depot.
“Drawn to vibrant colors and dramatic light, my goal is for the viewers to escape the chaos of everyday life and find reprieve in my paintings,” she said. “I often find inspiration in overlooked found objects. Lately my subject matter has been vintage glass insulators, marbles, feathers, doorknobs and dishes. There is a beauty in these old, forgotten objects and I try to paint them in a modern way that brings importance to them.”
Runnalls is scheduled for an exhibit of her work at the Union American Bistro in Castle Rock from Jan. 30 to Feb. 28, which we very much hope will happen. It’s indeed time for those brilliant colors and appealing images. They clearly draw the viewer into a happy private world ...
“I have been painting since I was little, but had a formal education through Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. I spent one of those college years abroad in Florence, Italy, where I was completely immersed in the arts.”
Runnalls’ precise painting technique, skillful composition and interpretation of her subjects reflects a classical approach to art education that allows her to interpret whatever subject matter she chooses, I’d imagine. It will be fun to watch her over the years as she focuses on an assortment of interesting materials/topics.
Referring to her choice of old glass power-line insulators as a subject, she wrote: “I often find that some of the most interesting works of art transcend the subject and the painting becomes more about the line, shape, color and form ...”
“Along with painting, I enjoy everything outdoors,” she said... “I ran competitively in college and while I have slowed down since then, I can be found running the trails, hiking, mountain biking and being outside with my two boys and husband. We have lived in Colorado for 12 years now and are still discovering new places to explore.”
One imagines that she is usually soaking up images outdoors as well: light, texture, color, line, reflections ... and how they blend together — images that may appear on canvas or paper at some point in the future.
Art lovers will want to watch for new works by Brigitte Runnalls — starting with the exhibit in Castle Rock and in future exhibits at the Depot Art Gallery, when it can be open again.
It the meantime, watch for an announcement of the next Littleton Fine Arts Guild exhibit, which we are told is being assembled by Peggy Dietz — will it be virtual or in person?
