PERRY — Floral designs etched into the hard, dark ceramic of pottery standing proud on podiums — a reminder of the origins where the clay has come from.

“I feel it relates to the idea that clay is just dirt,” said Andrew Foster, the artist who has brought the floral pottery to life in the Arts Council for Wyoming County’s latest exhibit. “All the sort of things you use to just make glaze or things that go on it is just sort of things that have been dug out of the ground.”

Foster, a 26-year-old from Pittsford, is the 2020 Rising Star Artist for the Arts Council for Wyoming County. A 2017 graduate from Houghton College who majored in studio art and specialized in ceramics, most the artwork he’s created for the exhibit have been over the course of the pandemic.

This is the first time Foster said he’s ever had a gallery show that’s just his work — he’s been in smaller exhibitions to which he submitted work.

Foster teaches at the Flower City Art Center in Rochester, where he also glazes and fires his pottery. He uses traditional techniques, including hand building, slab work and the pottery wheel.

Forming the clay into the shape he wants takes about 20 minutes — however baking and finishing the product takes about a day.

“Pottery is a handmade craft with sort of the mass producing — like at Walmart or some other store<” he said. “I think a lot of people don’t really understand it serves a different purpose.

“The mass produced stuff is great for if you just want to have something to serve food on or just for a general thing, but pottery that is sort of handmade, while you are supposed to use it, it’s something you live with,” he continued. “It’s something that sits on the shelf but you still want to look at it. It has this other realm to it other than just being a purely functional object.”

Foster got started into pottery when he was in college after taking a ceramic course his junior year, falling in love with the craft and deciding that’s what he wanted to do. He said he has always been interested in that creative path, always loving the idea of creating things that people can use.

He said when people ask what his work is about, he just really enjoys the “doing” part of it — the least interesting part for Foster is the finished product. Once it’s finished, Foster said, to him it’s for other people to enjoy.

The exhibit will be from Jan. 22 to Feb. 26 at 31 S. Main St. in Perry. For more information, call (585) 237-3517 or visit www.artswyco.org.
