AD has learned of the passing of French artist Guy de Rougemont yesterday, August 19, 2021, in Montpellier, France. Born in 1935, de Rougemont was a creative who defied categorization and blurred the boundaries between the fine and decorative arts. Throughout his career, he considered himself a painter, although he was well known for his expressive furniture designs. He once stated simply that he was a painter who designed furniture and made sculptures.
De Rougemont first gained recognition for a table he designed for the decorator Henri Samuel during the late 1960s. Although perhaps less well known outside of France for his other work, what has become known as the Cloud table gave him a large amount of visibility within the global design community.
The artist received many accolades throughout his career. One of his crowning achievements was undoubtedly being elected to the Academy of Fine Arts, part of the prestigious Institut de France, in 1997.
De Rougemont worked throughout the span of his entire life, spearheading several ongoing projects in his Marsillargues studio, and, until recently, drawing every day. Read more about the life and work of de Rougemont in this 2020 feature on his home in the south of France.
