The LBI Artist Open Studio Tour, a self-guided tour of 20 fine artists and crafters working on Long Beach Island, is this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14 and 15. Artists open their studios from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and welcome visitors to see what they are creating and how it is done. Artworks will be for sale.
Starting in Surf City and going north, first on the tour is Firefly Gallery, a building covered in mosaics created by Philadelphia muralist Isaiah Zagar with local volunteers. Inside find owner JoAnne Dozer showing her playful watercolors plus Steve Kuzma’s dreamy seascapes. Fiber arts and photography fill out the showcase.
Next is SwellColors Glass Studio and Gallery, owned by artist Mary Tantillo. Tantillo is unveiling her newest series of stained glass, “Puro Verano,” devoted to the sun. Amy Beth Kunze’s photography and other artists’ works abound in this attractive shop.
The m.t. burton gallery has the best in contemporary ceramics, including works by Matt Burton and Sue Pohanka, plus paintings by John Meehan, Alice McEnerney Cook and media artist Blakelee Harmon, as well as work by photographer Christopher Pfeil. Harmon will give live performance art pieces twice on Saturday, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
On 19th Street going toward the bay, artist Cathleen Engelsen opens her home studio, a 19th-century captain’s house, and sells prints of historic LBI scenes and more.
Bayfront, find Lori Bonanni’s home studio and perhaps catch her painting “en plein air.” Bonanni has also started painting with encaustic wax crayons.
Don’t leave Surf City yet. Solace Art Studio and Gallery premieres new works by Franny Andahazy and the 10 artists represented in her gallery.
In North Beach, stop for Frederick Ballet Photography. Harvey Cedars artist James Cordasco and photographers Carol Nussbaum and John Vlahakis all welcome visitors.
The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies offers the “Master Copies/ Interpretations” exhibit and a tour of the ceramics studio.
High Bar Harbor artists include painters Linda Ramsay, Rochelle Schaevitz and Susan Hennelly in their home studios and Sandra Kosinski in her High Bar Harbor Pottery.
Barnegat Light’s Wildflowers Too has work by acclaimed painter Kevin Coogan plus many others. SwellColors North in Viking Village features jewelry by Ceire Parker. Find crafts at Twigs Nest and Bloom plus the Laura Baisch Gallery.
On the south end of the Island, the lone participant is the Beach Haven Town Hall, where dozens of Pine Shores Art Association artists exhibit.
Since this is a self-guided tour, stop in as many venues as time allows and between beach-related activities. Or like true art aficionados, try to visit them all. It’s sure to be a pleasant and eye-opening experience. —P.J.
