In times of crisis, like the COVID-19 pandemic, among the only ways to cope is to find the silver linings. One of them is that quarantine offers a golden opportunity to spruce up one’s property—and for many, that includes green space. From installing a new fence to planting lettuce using a hydroponic system (not to mention gifting home-grown potted flowers to essential workers), some celebrities are proving during lockdown that they have green thumbs.

For some, it’s about growing vegetables to tinker with in the kitchen, while others wish to create a beautiful outdoor setting with lush foliage and flowers. With shelter-in-place orders, these celebs may be enjoying alfresco meals and morning coffee in their yards more than any other spring or summer, as concert tours, fashion shows, and filming for movies and television shows remain on pause. Below, AD rounds up the Hollywood stars sharing their gardening skills on social media.

Lauren Conrad

Swapping out plotting fashion designs for digging in the dirt, the former Hills star posted a snapshot of her just-picked peas in an artistic vignette right before lockdown. A perennial gardener, Conrad also recently posted an image of her clutching dusty rose and peachy "Moonlight in Paris” roses.

Zooey Deschanel

On Plant a Seed Day (March 19 this year), the New Girl actress filmed an upbeat segment just outside her home, framed by greenery, announcing she’s just planted vegetable seeds. In the video, she dons a floral-motif umbrella, along with a red sweater, proof that gardening days don't always have to be warm and dry. Deschanel took up the hobby well before the lockdown orders; she previously told AD that she grows lettuce and herbs in sculptural hydroponic contraptions called Farmstands in her backyard.

Elizabeth Hurley

The British model is not afraid of breaking a nail during what she dubs “manual labour.” Using a chain saw on her property is just one means by which she chips in. But despite her willingness to work outside, she's still a fashionista. A few days later she posted an Instagram photo of her sporting a leopard-print turban, fur collar, and red lipstick with the caption, "Filming a murder mystery at home."

Jennie Garth

While her Beverly Hills 90210 character, Kelly Taylor, might have scoffed at playing in the dirt, Garth doesn’t shy away from taking care of her “lettuce babies,” which she planted using an artful hydroponic system. Turns out gardening isn’t a new phase: She learned plenty growing up on an Illinois farm.

Joanna Gaines

This major DIYer has been picking strawberries with her kids at the family’s Texas farmstead. Gaines (who is gearing up to launch Magnolia Network with her husband, Chip) also offered a mini lesson on Instagram about how to build a foraged-flower arrangement, which provided a glimpse into her kitchen’s Tudor-style, asymmetrical-composition windows.

Beth Behrs

The 2 Broke Girls star spawned the #PlantitForwardMovement, leaving custom-painted terra-cotta pots for elderly neighbors and essential workers like mail carriers as, she says, “a way to give back.” She’s also a lifelong flower enthusiast, and recently thanked FlowerSchool Los Angeles for its flower-arranging class on her Instagram page.

Drew Barrymore

Riffing on her Flower Home line, which is sold at Walmart and includes quilts, appetizer plates, and oven mitts with a haute-hippie edge, the Santa Clarita Diet star included planting seeds in a list of Easter activity ideas. She also potted strawberry and olive plants at her home in recent weeks.

Walton Goggins

Yard work isn’t a beauty contest. The Righteous Gemstones actor worked up a sweat weeding in his yard, wearing a Late Show With Stephen Colbert T-shirt and a unicorn hat that was a nod to his CBS show The Unicorn. Later, he rewarded himself with a cold beer.

Jamie Lynn Spears

While she says she plans to lean into her “country side” for the upcoming Netflix romantic drama Sweet Magnolias, the actress is doing so in real life as well. She shared a video of herself and her family planting seeds outside of their home recently, cheekily making the location "Old MacDonald’s Farm."

Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani

One of the things Jimmy Fallon gleaned from his recent interview with the musician couple is that they’ve been building a garden at Shelton’s Oklahoma property. Along with Stefani’s kids, they also jammed out to roots-reggae band Steel Pulse.
