With many people staying at home because of the novel coronavirus, residents are finding hobbies to occupy their time.
Des Moines native and artist Mollie Wallace decided to document current events related to COVID-19 with a 3D visual journal titled "Pandema's Boxes."
"I've been saving these really old jewelry boxes and very small miniature stuff for a long time and had this idea in my head," Wallace said. "I became quarantined because of the virus, and I thought about the myth that Pandora opened up this box and all these crazy things that came out. She slammed the box shut, and the only thing that was left in the box was hope, which I think is poignant."
Wallace added that she feels society opened Pandora's box and it ended in a pandemic, thus birthing the title of the exhibition.
So far, the artist has created eight 3D journals with a current event theme, such as beach-goers in Florida during spring break, the importance of washing your hands, empty bars due to the social distancing policy and more.
Some of the boxes are still unfinished because Wallace is continuously adding to them. She noted that she is struggling to keep up due to her schedule of working from home and watching three children throughout the day.
However, Wallace has found her work therapeutic, making her "forget all the anxiety and all the things that are happening while I'm creating," she said.
It takes Wallace approximately two to four days to create each box. The materials include polymer clay, fabric, cardboard, foam core, or items that Wallace has collected since a child.
She also makes prints of certain items to get the correct imagery. For example, when the president called COVID-19 the "Chinese virus," Wallace printed off several of the President's tweets and his picture for the box.
Wallace's goal is to have her "Pandema's Boxes" exhibition featured in the Des Moines Art Center; however, when she reached out, the facility was booked for the next two years.
Still, Wallace's dream is to make it into an exhibit, art center or museum, because she wants the 3D journals on display for people to recap the COVID-19 timeline.
The response from her friends on Facebook has been positive, she added.
"It's been great. I think that's because of the fascination with tiny things."
