Actor Elliot Page, formerly Ellen Page, is transgender, he announced in a Tuesday Instagram post.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” wrote the Juno and Umbrella Academy star. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.”
Sharing “overwhelming gratitude” for support, particularly from the transgender community, Page promised to do his part in creating “a more loving and equal society.”
The 33-year-old continued, “I also ask for patience. My joy is real but it’s also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’ and of violence.”
“To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture,” he wrote. “The statistics are staggering. The discrimination toward trans people is rife, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. In 2020 alone, it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which have been Black and Latinx trans women.”
Page was sharing statistics by the Human Rights Campaign, which has tracked violent deaths against the transgender community since 2013. “We say at least because too often these stories go unreported — or misreported,” reads the website, listing names of recent victims. And according to the National Center for Transgender Equality, more than 25 percent of transgender people have been victims of a “bias-driven” assault, with higher rates for trans women and trans people of color.
The Oscar-nominated actor made his announcement 10 days after Transgender Day of Remembrance, which was on Nov. 20.
Page also appealed to politicians “who work to criminalize trans health care and deny our right to exist and to all of those with a massive platform who continue to spew hostility towards the trans community: you have blood on your hands. You unleash a flurry of vile and demeaning rage that lands on the shoulders of the trans community, a community in which 40 percent of trans adults report attempting suicide. Enough is enough.”
In August, a federal judge prevented the Trump administration from passing a law that attempted to remove discrimination protections “on the basis of sex” for transgender people.
In 2018, Page married girlfriend Emma Porter, a dance teacher. “Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife,” he wrote on Instagram. Four years prior, Page came out as gay during a speech at the Time to Thrive conference, an annual event by the Human Rights Campaign to promote safety and wellbeing for transgender people.
"I'm here today because I am gay," Page said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "And because maybe I can make a difference, to help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”
He added, “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."
On Tuesday, Page wrote in his post, “I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive.”
He added, “To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”
