Carol Ryman is the February Artist of the Month, as chosen by Artists by the Lake Club.

Born in a small town in Wisconsin, Ms. Ryman has always enjoyed drawing and painting, music, sports and being outdoors. She spent a year majoring in piano at a conservatory of music, before traveling to Chicago to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She met her husband and married and moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota. Her husband was a minister, and she was a teacher of obstetrics at Naeve Hospital, School of Nursing. They soon had two daughters and moved to Stillwater, Minnesota and later to Cobden, Illinois to serve a small church and a summer youth camp.

”This was such a beautiful location and home of the Illinois Cinderella 1964 basketball team, The Apple Knockers!” Ms. Ryman states.

While there, Ms. Ryman joined a church group that painted weekly and competed in the county extension competitions.

“I also served as camp nurse and enjoyed being around all those active young people and helping with their art projects,” she said.

Finally, the couple retired to Wisconsin in the Kettle Moraine area and traveled to Arizona during winter time, as one daughter and family lived in the Phoenix area. That is when Ms. Ryman discovered  Artists by The Lake.

“I have met many good teachers and friends in classes and continue to enjoy their friendship and instruction,” she said.

Ms. Ryman enjoys painting from photos and sketches (hers and by her family), remembering special moments and places they’ve been. Many of her paintings are based of special memories of camping during childhood, family reunions and gatherings for special moments. “The Red Canoe” is a memory of a summer experience which makes this painting so personal.

“Viewpoint Lake has provided inspiration for several of my paintings,” states Ms. Ryman. She goes there to walk and photograph the surroundings including wildlife. Her painting “Blue Heron at Lakeview” is an example of what can be discovered on a leisurely walk around the paths. She also finds great joy when she paints with her granddaughter whose creativity is one of her inspirations.

Ms. Ryman’s art is on view for the month of February in the showcase on the second floor of the Lakeview Recreation Center, 10626 W. Thunderbird Road. To join Artists by the Lake, stop by the art room 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Wednesday. The club is open to Sun City residents with a valid RCSC card. The club room is located on the second floor at Lakeview center. Any level of art experience can be accommodated in the small classes for members. Social distancing and masks are required on the ramp outside the art room and in the art room at all times.
