PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- More than a year after it was originally announced, Parma Heights is moving forward with efforts to add a brand-new mural at its westerly Pearl Road gateway into the community.

“With all of our multimodal transportation and other stuff going in this year, and also the new wayfinding signs with tagline ‘Community Grows Here,’ we’re trying to combine that with starting up a mural program,” Parma Heights Director of Community & Economic Development Joseph E. Sebes said.

“Working in collaboration with the Parma Heights Historical Society, we received a $4,000 grant from the Cuyahoga County Arts and Culture Program. The mural was supposed to be completed last year but with the COVID they extended it out another year to be safe.”

The $4,000 matching portion of the grant will come from Parma Heights, while Alina and Tony Saini -- owners of Party Décor located at 6708 Pearl Road -- offered the southwest-facing side of their building.

“I want to thank the historical society for taking the initiative to apply for this grant,” said Parma Heights Mayor Michael P. Byrne in a press release. “The society has a long history of supporting our community and preserving our history.

“This new mural project takes that commitment to a new level, proving once again ‘Community Grows Here.’ Having artwork that reflects who we are will make Parma Heights an even more attractive community to live, work and visit.”

In addition to putting out an RFQ via its website for artists later this month, Parma Heights is also convening a committee of local stakeholders, residents and historical society members to choose the mural.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Parma Heights to create an activity that is both informative as well as emphasizing the history and contributions of the city and its residents,” said Parma Heights Historical Society President Jim Griffith in a press release. “None of this would be possible without our partners at the Cuyahoga County Arts and Culture Grant Program.”

Parma Heights Historical Society Treasurer Aldo Melaragno said the hope is the mural becomes a catalyst for future public art projects in the community.

Sebes echoed those thoughts.

“We’ll going to start small,” Sebes said. “We have one mural planned, and if there’s enough money leftover we may do another small one somewhere else. Otherwise, as time goes on, we’d love to eventually do a second mural.”
