The District of Sechelt has issued two more callouts for artists, following the notice earlier in May about the district’s 2021 lamppost banner project. The banner deadline has passed. However, Sunshine Coast residents now have a chance to make submissions for two other art competitions. The first, with a May 31 deadline, is “to create original designs to be reproduced and applied to utility boxes in Sechelt.” Up to four artists and/or photographers will be selected in the first stage, and two of them will move onto the final process. Honoraria totalling up to $650 will be awarded to the finalists, while artists selected for the first stage will receive $150 for their completed art-wrap design concepts.
The second opportunity, made possible by a grant from the provincial government, involves creation of a mural on two sides of the washroom building at Hackett Park. The district hopes to “create a welcoming space in the heart of the park, add colour and vibrancy to the building,” and deter graffiti. This is a much larger-scale project than the utility box wraps and comes with a budget of $9,000. That figure, however, includes material and other costs. Short-listed artists will receive $250 for completed designs. The deadline to submit applications is June 7. To get full details and forms, go to sechelt.ca and follow the link under the “What’s New” banner.
Apasionado
The versatile, multi-instrumentalist and vocal duo Apasionado, featuring Lori Carmichael and Randy Rayment, will play three live shows on the patio at the Clubhouse Restaurant at the Pender Harbour Golf Course this weekend. On Friday, May 21, and Saturday, May 22 they’ll perform numbers from their pop and standards playlist from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Sunday, May 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. There’s a $5 cover for the Sunday performance.
