MUSKEGON, MI – A Muskegon artist is painting a large mural on a shipping container that will greet visitors at Pere Marquette Park on Lake Michigan.

The Deck, a beachfront restaurant that recently expanded its beach beer garden, commissioned Jubenal Rodriguez to paint the first of three murals planned for shipping containers used in the addition.

Rodriguez said he wanted the artwork to represent the area, and it prominently features “Muskegon” atop a sunset-inspired backdrop with reds, oranges and greens.

“I wanted to capture some of the colors that we tend to miss,” he said.

After The Deck completed an expansion last spring, the restaurant saw a 62% increase in customers, owner Fred Scharmer previously told MLive/Muskegon Chronicle.

Muskegon City Commission approved plans in the fall to add two bars and snack shop as a part of the second addition.

The shipping containers will feature bars inside and seating on top.

Scharmer said there was some resident pushback on the shipping containers being installed at beach, but he thinks the murals are a “wonderful approach” to showcase local artists.

The container painted by Rodriguez faces the beach and will be seen by tourists heading to the pier.

“It’s a blessing for so many people to walk by and interact with it and hopefully take a picture of it,” he said.

Rodriguez grew up in Muskegon and about a decade ago worked as a dishwasher for Harris Hospitality, the restaurant group that owns The Deck.

“He had these dreams of being an artist one day,” Scharmer said. “It’s kind of an awesome story that 10 years later he’s an amazing guy that does murals for the city and places downtown. His dream kind of came true.”

Rodriguez has since graduated from Kendall College of Art and Design and painted three other murals in the Muskegon area, including an expansive painted work on the corner of Third Street and Monroe Avenue, a mural at the Rake Beer Project and one at the Muskegon Area District Library Muskegon Heights branch.

“It’s just giving back to the community and the youth and allowing them to spark their imagination,” he said.

Rodriguez expects to finish the mural the week of The Deck’s season opening on Tuesday, May 25.

During the summer season, The Deck will be open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. with live music each evening.
