JACKSON, Wyo. — Jackson Hole Public Art has selected ten artists to participate in this year’s WildWalls, an annual event during which local artists transform Jackson’s blank exterior walls into an open-air gallery from June through September.
Continuing the tradition of bringing the art and science communities together, this year’s artists will be responding to scientific data and developments from within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. WildWalls is a visual, interactive, and educational event without the confines of a traditional venue, making it accessible to thousands of people daily.
In addition to nine temporary, wheat-pasted murals that will be located throughout downtown Jackson, artist Katy Fox will begin work on a new, permanent mural located at Trio Bistro and sponsored by JH Public Art, The Nature Conservancy, and the Teton Conservation District. The mural will be Fox’s first large-scale mural in Jackson, and the Trio alley wall – at over 60 feet long – has already begun its transformation as work continues over the month of May.
Fox is originally from northern Idaho and arrived in Jackson after pursuing her Masters in Fine Art degree at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. She was selected for the project by a committee of local business owners and arts professionals.
The temporary mural artists include Julia Brady and Lida Steves; Natalie Connell; Ryan Dee; Nicole Gaitan; Ava Reynolds; Helen Seay; Shannon Troxler; Drew Yerkovich; University of Wyoming Migration Initiative.
WildWalls 2021 will combine each mural with augmented reality features that promote a greater understanding and awareness of the region’s ecosystem through scientific research available on the Hoverlay app on all smartphones.
JH Public Art is working with the selected artists and eco-partners including The Nature Conservancy, Grand Teton National Park Foundation, Teton Conservation District, Protect Our Water JH, and Trout Unlimited, to generate the educational content to make each mural come alive. This year’s augmented reality animations will be created by Ryan Dee, Kika McFarland, Ouree Lee, Tala Schlossberg, and University of Wyoming students.
