GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A little girl lost in a story book and seated on a park bench with a 5-foot tall wise old owl watching over her are the new sculptures by Nebraska artist Sondra L. Jonson and Michigan artist Steve Anderson at the Cedar Springs Public Library outside Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Jonson’s sculpture, “Once Upon a Time,” was originally part of a larger bronze group she created for the public library in Syracuse, Neb. Last August, metal artist Steve Anderson of Cedar Springs, Mich., (andersonsmetalsculpture.com), contacted Jonson on behalf of the Community Building Development Team of Cedar Springs.
The team was looking for a bronze sculpture of a child reading to place on a park bench beside Anderson’s large steel owl called, “Wisdom & Imagination.”
They searched online but couldn’t find any sculptures they liked as well as Jonson’s. Mr. Tom Mabie, who inspired and guided this sculpture project, sent Jonson a message: “Both Steve and I were very impressed by the beauty of your work. Although we looked at many similar sculptures, yours stood far above any of the others. I’m very pleased that you will work with us.” Because Jonson’s little girl was originally seated on a bronze tree stump, she had to resculpt the girl in plaster, so a new version could be fitted onto the park bench by Anderson’s large Owl sculpture.
The project, begun in September 2020, was completed and installed in April 2021. On the cover of the book in the little girl’s hands, Jonson carved the title of her work, “Once Upon a Time.” The steel owl also holds a large book tucked under one of his wings. Anderson’s owl and Jonson’s little girl differ from each other in materials and style, but they work beautifully together to create a welcoming message for visitors to the library. For Jonson, who has loved books and libraries all her life, this was a labor of love.
