Catt Sadler appeared on Instagram Live to talk about her battle with COVID-19, which she contracted after caring for her unvaccinated 20-year-old son.
The entertainment reporter took to Instagram last week to announce that she is positive for COVID-19, despite being fully inoculated with the Moderna vaccines.
"I’m fully vaccinated and I have Covid," Sadler wrote in the caption of her post. "I’m telling you this so that you understand that the pandemic is very much NOT over. Delta grabbed hold of me even after getting vaccinated.”
At the time, Sadler said she was caring for her son, who had the virus. Still, the podcast host said, she became one of the rare-but-possible “breakthrough” cases, with symptoms that included extreme congestion, a fever, and serious fatigue.
On Friday, Sadler appeared on an Instagram Live with Katie Couric and E.R. physician Jeremy Faust to discuss her surprising COVID-19 case.
“At first I was just so shocked because I thought 'What? I'm vaccinated,'” she explained. “I was exposed more than the average person, but I feel like there's so many people out there who did the right thing and got vaccinated but are walking around with this false sense of security.”
Though said it was her son’s “personal choice” not to get vaccinated, she admitted that she wishes “he would come to the other side.”
"I've spoken with a lot of my followers, mothers who say 'I have the same issue, my grown kids are resisting,'” Sadler explained. “He's just holding out, he's been skeptical and then he gets sick. It's not like I want to say I told you so, but it's going through my mind."
While Sadler is on the mend now, she said she stressed to her son that choosing to remain unvaccinated “doesn’t just affect you.”
"Your choices really do have an effect on those around you,” she explained. “It's not just about you. So, I would ask people to remember that when they're making up their minds."
Sadler recently took to her blog to explain how despite the situation, she and her son — who she shares with her ex-husband Kyle Boyd — still “love each other deeply.”
“I’m not kicking him out or lashing out or mad at him for his choice even though it had a direct negative affect on me,” she continued. “And he doesn’t mind that I’m sharing our story publicly. We both have a right to our individual choices and although he doesn’t support my choice to get the vaccine, he doesn’t mock me or brutalize me or kick me when I’m down.”
She also encouraged people to be kinder to one another.
“I guess what I’m getting at is, hasn’t this gone too far? The cyber bullying? The disconnect between humanity today? Isn’t it exhausting?” she wrote. “Don’t you feel like living in a world where you can lay down your armor and give it a rest? Is it not possible to have healthy debate rather than annihilating each other to the core?”
