The often bleak streets of Los Angeles’ Skid Row got a little brighter on Monday, July 19.
A colorful 66-foot tall mural unveiled at the Los Angeles Mission was donated and painted by artist Kenny Scharf. The artwork on the corner of Winston St and Wall St; features a part of the Los Angeles skyline at street level, rising to a heart reaching up to a cross that sits atop the building, a nod to the symbol of the sacred heart.
Scharf spent four days working on the mural painted in his signature style.
The art already seemed to affect those who live on the surrounding streets. “There has been a constant flow of people stopping, starring, and admiring it (mural),” said Eli Graham, chairperson of the LA Mission Arts Council.
The mural is also motivating people to help out at the mission; according to Graham.
“It is also inspiring people to come volunteer,” he said, “which is the best part.”
Scharf, a 62-year-old Los Angeles native, is known for his contributions to New York City’s vibrant East Village art scene in the 1980s, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.
Scharf’s artwork spans painting, sculpture, fashion, video, performance art and street creations.
Recently, Scharf has been a guest designer for the 2021 Dior Men’s Fashion Collection.
