Today, City Councilors Don Harris and Lan Sena hosted a dedication ceremony for Albuquerque’s newest mural, “Limitless,” by artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. The mural is featured on a large wall of the Cooperative Educational Services Building in the Sandia Science & Technology Park in southeast Albuquerque.
The mural project is a partnership between the Sandia Science & Technology Park Program Office staffed by Sandia National Laboratories employees, Cooperative Educational Services, the City of Albuquerque’s Public Art Urban Enhancement Division, Technology Leadership High School, Meow Wolf Santa Fe, and Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, an award-winning neuroscientist-turned-multidisciplinary artist and STEM advocate. The project began in early October with support from the City’s 1% for Public Art Program.
“Public art enhances our community and I’m excited to have this one-of-a-kind mural featured in the Sandia Science & Technology Park,” said Councilor Don Harris. “I applaud the work from all the partners to provide this mural and their continuous efforts to make the Sandia Science & Technology Park a truly unique component to Albuquerque.”
“We’re proud that partnerships with the Sandia Science & Technology Park helped bring this science-themed mural to Albuquerque,” said Mary Monson, Sandia National Laboratories senior manager for Technology Partnerships and Business Development. “Art inspires gathering, the exchange of ideas and invites people to pause, chat or think about themes they might not otherwise consider during a walk or drive through town. We’re looking forward to this mural creating discussion and joy within this space.”
Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya was born in Atlanta, GA, to Thai and Indonesian immigrants. Amanda studied neuroscience at Columbia and worked at an Alzheimer’s research lab before becoming a full-time artist, educator, and activist based in Brooklyn, NY. This mural, “Limitless,” is part of her “Findings” public art series that celebrates women and science, with murals across the United States, including: Brooklyn, NY, Washington D.C., Silicon Valley, CA, Oakland, CA, Denver, CO, Seattle, WA, and Philadelphia, PA.
The “Limitless” mural shows women reaching toward each other within a landscape of bursting bubbles. The art represents what happens when electrons’ orbitals overlap, connect, activate, and conduct electricity. Similarly, when women collaborate, they can create using energy that doesn’t exist on their own.
“It’s an incredible honor to have the powerful work of Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya showcased in Albuquerque,” said Councilor Lan Sena. “Her perspective as Asian-American Pacific Islander woman is important to share, appreciate, and reflect upon. I want to thank the project’s partners for bringing Amanda’s vision to our community.”
The Heising-Simons Foundation is funding the “Findings” series and provided this statement: “The Heising-Simons Foundation congratulates Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya and the city of Albuquerque on the mural ‘Limitless,’ based on the research of Dr. Nadya Mason. The foundation is honored by and impressed with the creative processes by which Amanda conveys not just the research of the scientists, but their place in the fabric of scientific inquiry and discovery. Just as electrons overlapping in orbitals create new matters of state, Amanda creates new understandings of physicists and astronomers in a manner that transcends subjects and humanity.”
The project’s partnership included youth from Technology Leadership High School. Students were able to engage with the art and science of the mural and participated in the painting process with Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya.
“Amanda has been amazing to work with and I’m so excited that Albuquerque is one of the 10 cities selected to be home to one of her murals,” said Sherri Bruggemann, City of Albuquerque Public Art Enhancement Division Manager. “I am humbled to have been able to help be an advocate for this project and her vision for the past year, and work with an equally excited group of folks at the Sandia Science & Technology Park. This privately-funded, public mural is the first of what we hope will be more public art for this area.”
