A local artist gave staffers at Plano’s Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital a thank you painting instead of a card, NBC 5 (KXAS-TV) reported.

Susie Cortez told the station that she presented the painting to the hospital as a way to thank the 14 staffers who cared for her father, Mario Cortez, 88, while he was ill with COVID-19 for 10 days at the hospital in March.

Cortez said she feared the worst when her father got pneumonia from the virus because he also has diabetes and only one kidney, according to the report.

The artwork Cortez gave to the hospital features portraits of the medical team who cared for her father, according to NBC 5.

Cortez spent six months creating the painting and gave it to the hospital last week. It was her father’s idea for how to thank them, NBC 5 reported.

“Creating this piece, I felt happiness inside my heart, not sadness,” Cortez said in a hospital press release.

“As I painted and looked at the individual photos of healthcare workers, I could sense smiles behind those masks. Hopefully, I captured those emotions, and others will find joy in my artwork as well.”

Cortez’s painting will be on display for several months at the hospital, according to the station’s report.

Cortez told NBC 5 she hopes the painting will encourage other patients and let them know they have people caring for them and watching over them.
