British artist David Hockney remains the top-selling living artist, with sales of his works at public auction amounting to US$132 million in 2020, according to the Hurun Global Art List released Monday.

Hockney, 84, also topped last year’s list, launched by Hurun, a research firm based in China and India, in collaboration with Shanghai International Commodity Auction Co. The list ranks the top 50 living artists around the globe by sales of their works in a calendar year.

A total of 511 Hockney works were sold in 2020, the latest year analyzed. The most expensive piece was his 1980 Los Angeles landscape, Nichols Canyon, which realized US$41 million at a Phillips  20th century and contemporary art sale in December. Also, his Portrait of Sir David Webster, the former general administrator of the Royal Opera House in London, sold for US$17 million in October.

On the second spot of this year’s ranking is Chinese painter Cui Ruzhuo, 77, with sales of his works achieving US$113 million. His most expensive work was his Landscape (2017), which fetched US$27.5 million at a Yongle auction.

German artist Gerhard Richter, 89, ranked third with auction sales standing at US$102 million in 2020. A total of 285 works by Richter were sold last year, and his abstract painting Abstraktes Bild sold for US$28 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong.

Overall, the U.S. leads with 15 artists on the list, followed by China with 12; the U.K. with seven; Japan with four; and Germany with three. Nine other countries, each, are represented by one artist on the list.

“Curiously, traditional art powerhouses like France had only one artist on the list, while Italy had none. One reason perhaps is that the world’s leading art auction houses are based in New York, London, Hong Kong, and Beijing,” Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun chairman and chief researcher, said in a news release Monday.

Compared to last year, total auction sales of the works of this year’s top 50 artists dropped 24% to US$1.4 billion.

“However, this does not necessarily mean that the value of art works decreased, it may be because good works were not put up for auction by collectors last year,” Hoogewerf said.

Other key findings in the report include:

  • The average age of the top 50 living artists is 68, the same as 2019;
  • Of the 12 new faces on the list, four were from China and three from the U.S.;
  • Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, 92, was the only female artist in the top 10. She ranked 5th with US$66 million, up two places from last year;
  • Only three artists broke through the US$100 million sales mark, three less than last year;
  • The youngest artist on the list is Banksy, 47, who is ranked 6th with auction sales of US$64 million

Auction data were provided by Artprice.com, a leading art market information platform, for non-China artists, while data from China were from CAFA National Institute of Art and Cultural Policy, according to the report.
