The Book of Boba Fett Episode 4 “The Gathering Storm” finally reveals how exactly Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) became such good friends. Well, it explains how exactly Boba Fett was able to save the assassin from death on the sands of Tatooine. No, Boba Fett isn’t secretly a field medic, nor does he have an insurance plan accepted at local Outer Rim hospitals. Instead, Boba brought Fennec to Mos Eisley’s Mod Artist, a mad scientist figure played by renowned bass player Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner.
As we learned in last week’s episode of The Book of Boba Fett, the youths of Tatooine have moved past going to the Toschi Station to pick up some power converters and have embraced full on cyber punk weirdness. “Mods” are young folks who have replaced key body parts with machinery to enhance their cool factor. Turns out Tatooine’s native son Anakin Skywalker was way ahead of his time when he became, as Obi-Wan Kenobi put it, “more machine now than man.” That Vader, always a trend setter! No wonder his grandson was obsessed with his cool “vintage” helmet! (I jest. Or do I?) We learn his week who exactly is doing all this work for the likes of Drash (Sophie Thatcher) and her pals…the Mod Artist.
But who exactly is the Mod Artist and who is Thundercat, the bass player who plays him on The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+? Here’s everything you need to know about The Book of Boba Fett’s Mod Artist, Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner.
Who is Stephen “Thundercat” Bass, the Mod Artist on The Book of Boba Fett?
The Book of Boba Fett Episode 4 introduces a character simply known as the “Mod Artist.” He’s sort of a cyberpunk plastic surgeon/tattoo artist with the ability to add machine modifications to human bodies. In most cases, these mods are there for a mix of enhanced fighting ability and aesthetic reasons. However when Boba Fett brings Fennec Shand to the Mod Artist, he asks him to save the assassin’s life. Fennec took a shot to the gut in Season 1 of The Mandalorian and now we know that Boba paid the money meant for the Tusken Raiders to have her insides replaced with whirling gears and machines.
So who plays the Mod Artist? The Book of Boba Fett’s credits call the actor Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, but music fans know him better as simply Thundercat. Thundercat is a bassist, guitarist, and singer who got his start with the LA band Suicidal Tendencies. However, he might be better known for his work on groundbreaking albums like Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. Thundercat and Lamar won a Grammy for their work on the song “These Walls.” Thundercat has also released his own music on albums such as It is What it Is and Drunk. You can check out Thundercat’s music on Spotify.
