The mural in Deep Ellum that captured the imagination and sentiment of many Mavericks fans, but also raised the ire of team governor Mark Cuban, is no more.
Local artist Preston Pannek told The News on Tuesday that he has painted over his much publicized Luka Doncic “Please send help” mural, doing so at Doncic’s request. Pannek said that he and his wife, House of Pannek co-artist Adrienne Creasey-Pannek, will collaborate with Doncic on a replacement mural in the next few weeks.
The original mural, a likeness of Doncic holding up a sign that read “Please send help” and surrounded by four of Doncic’s most astonishing statistical lines from this season, was characterized as “disrespectful” by Cuban during an email exchange with Preston Pannek.
Then two days ago, according to Preston Pannek, a representative of Doncic’s reached out and asked him to consider replacing the mural. On Tuesday Pannek painted over the old mural in black and spray-painted in turquoise letters: “Coming Soon: This new mural is planned with the support of Luka Doncic (and) brought to you by @lukadoncic and @thehouseofpannek. #MFFL.”
“It wasn’t my intention to to antagonize anyone,” Preston Pannek said. “I was having a little fun, but some people took it the wrong way, thinking that I was talking about the players.
“And that’s just crazy. I’m a huge Mavs fan and I love all of our players. I’m not under the delusion that we’re going to get somebody without losing somebody. I know how the game works. I love everybody that’s here. I just would like to get Luka that ‘Robin,’ you know?”
Many Mavs fans know. It’s a sentiment they’ve expressed throughout this roller-coaster 24-21 Mavericks season, which has seen the team follow up a recent 8-1 stretch with a 1-4 road trip.
The Dallas Morning News and other media organizations, local and national, wrote about and photographed the original mural, on one of the side walls of St. Pete’s Dancing Marlin in Deep Ellum.
“We didn’t know how long the mural was gonna stay up in the first place,” Pannek said. “It was a temporary one that we had put up. We had thought that by the end of the (Feb. 9) trade deadline, if nothing had happened, we probably were going to take it down because we don’t want to antagonize anybody. Also we didn’t think it would go to the degree that it has gone to.”
Lake Highlands graduate Preston and Adrienne have painted several dozen large murals throughout Deep Ellum.
Preston says he has been a hardcore Mavericks fan since 2000, the same year in which Cuban purchased controlling interest of the franchise.
Preston said the original mural “got the message across. I think everybody’s seen it, so there’s no point for it to stay up anymore.”
The representative who reached out in Doncic’s behalf is Lara Beth Seager, who planned the jersey retirement and statue unveiling ceremony of Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki. Seager has represented and collaborated with many high-profile clients, including Bon Jovi, the Dallas Cowboys and Apple. When the Mavericks played the Blazers in Portland on Sunday, Seager sat next to Doncic’s agent, Bill Duffy.
Although Pannek has not communicated directly with Doncic, he said they are on the same page about the new mural.
“Now, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be about; I can’t tell anybody,” Pannek said. “I don’t think Luka is going to be saying anything to what it’s going to be about either. But he has a different message is pretty much what the what the sum of this is.
“Hopefully we can we could keep doing art and have some more fun next couple years,” Pannek said. “And so everybody knows, there’s a lot of frustration with a lot of sports here at Dallas.
“I may not be done yet.”
