A well-known Mobile musician and artist is asking people to keep an eye out after thieves took a trailer full of distinctive paintings Monday night.
Ryan Balthrop has been prominent among coastal Alabama singer-songwriters for years. He also has a creative sideline as a painter, using old window frames as his canvas. He decorates the glass panes with depictions of coastal scenery and landmarks.
His works tend to list in the $300 to $500 range, and there were about 40 of them in the trailer, he said. Beyond the money, each painting involves around 10 to 15 hours of work. The amount of effort represented by the contents of the trailer is staggering.
“Damn,” Balthrop said Tuesday. “I just hope they don’t just take them and throw them out somewhere and break the glass.”
Examples, including some of the stolen paintings, can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/southernwindowart.
The most likely scenario probably is that the thieves wanted the trailer and neither knew nor cared what was inside it. It was taken Monday night from Balthrop’s residence on Riviera Drive off McVay Drive, not far from the intersection of McVay and Navco Road.
Balthrop said the trailer is a plain white metal 5- by 9-foot trailer with a missing fender on its right side. Anyone with information can call or text 251-382-4182.
