The Warren Miller Performing Arts Center and Montana Repertory Theatre are seeking proposals from Native American artists who have a personal or ancestral relationship with Montana.
The commission seeks work that can be performed for an audience, and partnering organizations are particularly interested in works that address the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women epidemic.
"We took a hard look at our mission and decided that we wanted to focus on stories by, for and about all the people who live in Montana. That meant giving space to Montana's Indigenous population and to their stories," said Michael Legg, artistic director of Montana Repertory Theatre.
Randolph Reinholz, co-founder of Native Voices at the Autry, one of the commission's community partners, said that Indigenous representation matters.
"This play has potential to make an impact in many parts of the state, with people who may not know the issues faced by their Native American neighbors," he said.
The commissioned artist will receive $10,000 and support through an artist retreat in Big Sky and workshop in the Bitterroot Lab of the Montana Repertory Theatre. The artist will also have research support through the University of Montana School of Law, the Margery Hunter Brown Indian Law Clinic and the Payne Native American Center.
The premiere of the work will be at the Montana Repertory Theatre in April 2022, followed by a statewide tour.
Though the organizations list a few guidelines (below), Legg said "there really aren't a ton of requirements."
"Your artistic leanings don't even have to be towards theatre or playwriting. Any artist can submit a proposal for any kind of project to be shared with an audience," he said.
Guidelines:
- The commissioned work can be a play, piece of dance theater or any work meant to be performed for an audience.
- Proposals should include: an introduction to the artist and previous work, a sample of previous work, a one-page proposal describing the project.
- Artists without formal resumes or documentation of previous work are encouraged to apply.
