An artist reception for the exhibition, “Bakken: The Artistry of Father and Son,” is planned from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the council’s gallery at Northland Community and Technical College.
The reception is an opportunity to meet the artists, both of Hallock, Minn., and purchase artwork.
Refreshments will be served. Masks and social distancing will be required. Attendees should enter through Door A at the college. Visitor parking is free in the large end lot.
The Bakkens’ artwork has been consistently popular, as evidenced by the awards it has garnered in art exhibits, Hanel said, adding that, in the 21 years of the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council Art Exhibit, “there is rarely a year that Rock or Beau do not show their paintings.”
Both have won first prize in the council’s annual exhibit, according to Hanel, adding that visitors to the NWMAC gallery at NCTC will see why Rock Bakken is well-known in the area for his detailed drawings and paintings of animals and birds.
“He places them in landscapes that depict our area and forest of the North, in a style that is popular, especially with men who enjoy high-quality wildlife art," she said.
Rock Bakken creates high-quality prints and greeting cards that are available for purchase at his store, Bakken Boots in Hallock, and at arts and crafts fairs throughout the valley.
The exhibit also will feature several of Beau Bakken’s large acrylic paintings, with many for sale.
“They are different from his father’s -- often depicting parks and street scenes from foreign locations, in a painting style that is expressive and loose," she said.
Beau Bakken, who was selected to receive the council’s Artist of the Year Award in 2016, is known for his large mural paintings that are displayed in Hallock, Kennedy, Red Lake Falls and other towns in the Red River Valley, according to Hanel.
Six of Beau Bakken’s large movie posters, from the private collection of Hanel and her husband, will be on exhibit for this show only. They represent the films, “Star Wars,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “My Fair Lady,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Tommy Boy” and “A Bug’s Life.”
His attention to detail while recreating the movie posters “is amazing,” Hanel said.
The exhibition, made possible with funding from the McKnight Foundation, will be displayed through Nov. 30.
Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at other times when events are held at the college.
