VICKSBURG, MI— Passersby now have a piece of artwork to appreciate along Portage Road, west of Vicksburg. An art instillation that stands 20 feet tall and 60 feet wide can now be seen towering above ground level, on the side of a grain silo at H&H Farms.
Images of things like huge corn stalks, bacon strips, semitrailers and the shape of a heart help spell out a 20-foot-tall message of “Love” on the silo.
The artist, Debbie Lorenz of Davison, was commissioned by the the farm to do the extensive piece. Lorenz’s son, Jared, has worked with the farm for the past decade after graduating from Michigan State University.
“The process over a year was one of the most incredible adventures I’ve ever been on,” Lorenz said.
The project started in fall 2019, but due to weather and dust, the project could not be completed onsite. Rather, Lorenz found a new way of creating the mural — in her family room and garage.
She broke the massive mural into 44 separate 4-foot-by-8-foot boards. Lorenz, a painter for over 40 years, said she has mainly worked on canvas using oil-based paints; however, this project was done with acrylic paint and on boards rather than canvas.
The paintings took roughly 9 months. The boards have since been installed, piece by piece, at the farm.
H&H Farms, 14093 Portage Road, has been a family owned and operated farm since 1978.
On Wednesday afternoon, family and friends gathered for the unveiling of the massive mural.
This is the third mural Lorenz has painted, having been commissioned by AC Delco in the 1980s to paint murals on the wall of the plant where she worked. The other mural can be found inside Flint’s Sloan Museum.
