To illustrate the impact people have on those around them, officials from the Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art are putting out a call for an artist to complete “Your Life Matters,” the Hub City’s 21st public art mural.

The project will measure approximately 11.5 feet high by 33 feet wide and will be placed along the exterior of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on East 8th Street. The mural will face the newly restored East 8th Street basketball and tennis courts and will be visible from Chain Park, Hattiesburg’s 37-acre public park along the Bouie River.

“As Hattiesburg’s next public art project was considered, an uplifting and supportive message to the community, particularly for our youth, was a priority,” said Marlo Dorsey, executive director of Visit Hattiesburg. “Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church has long been a cornerstone of the neighborhood, and we are excited they are helping us share this positive message.

“The new mural will showcase the impact individuals can have on the place they call home. The Call for Artists encourages painters to submit up to two concepts with their own interpretation of the theme. HAPA is seeking a diverse range of submissions and encourages minority artists, both from Mississippi and beyond, to apply.”    

The Call for Artists is open to anyone with professional experience in public art or painting, and interested artists can apply for the project online at https://bit.ly/36NerBI. All applications must be electronically submitted by 5 p.m. Oct. 23, and no late or incomplete applications will be considered.

Artist selection will be made by Nov. 2, and work on the mural must be fully completed by Nov. 27.

The mural will convey the message “The world needs the best of you ... because you matter.” The final design selection will be based on artistic merit, creativity, demonstrated ability, technical knowledge and the artist’s interpretation of the theme.

“As redevelopment in Ward 2 continues, the East 8th Street corridor near Chain Park is the ideal location for this mural,” Dorsey said.
