On Friday evening dozens of community members gathered in Tenney Alley in Old Town Fort Collins to be part of an unveiling of a new mural, “Colores de la Comunidad,” by Greeley artist Armando Silva.
Silva and nonprofit Trees, Water and People collaborated together to create the project, paid for through private donations and money from the City of Fort Collins Fort Fund.
The mural, which spans 40 feet along a wall in the alley, was inspired from stories told to Silva by students and teachers from the Poudre School District, local Native Americans, and partners of the nonprofit in Central America and Pine Ridge, SD.

“I was involved in the whole process so I heard the testimonies and the stories Armando collected,” said Sebastian Africano, executive director of the nonprofit. “I came and saw every stage of it and every new edition was mind blowing. The details that you see between the principal elements are so special, too.”
The mural is designed to “stimulate conversation about the roots of migration, amplify Lantinx and indigenous voices and experiences in our community and increase understanding and positive interactions between cultures in our hometown.”

As ash from the nearby fire softly rained down on the group, Silva explained what the opportunity to create the mural meant to him.
“This mural is for this community, but this mural is also for my family; for my own trajectory of who I am as a person,” Silva said. “I am super blessed that I am where we are and that I am the person that I am because of my family.”

Trees, Water and People was founded in 1998 by Richard Fox and Stuart Conway, two foresters who saw a need to address the deforestation in Latin America.
The nonprofit not only advocates for reforestation, but also works to distribute clean cook stoves and other clean energy products to people in areas such as El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
