CLEVELAND, Ohio – Barring a miscount or an unanticipated sales surge in the last 24 hours, Machine Gun Kelly’s “Tickets to My Downfall” will debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, according to Hits Daily Double. MGK will narrowly beat out artists Joji and SuperM.
The news, which will be made official this weekend, marks a new milestone for the Cleveland artist. MGK’s previous highest charting position on the chart was No. 4, which he accomplished with his first two albums “Lace Up” and “General Admission.”
“Tickets to My Downfall” is also Machine Gun Kelly’s first pop-punk album, having previously released hip hop projects. Should it stand, the album’s bow at No. 1 marks the first time a Cleveland-bred artist (meaning an act who began their career in The Land) has conquered the Billboard 200 since Nine Inch Nails released “With Teeth” in 2005.
In terms of Northeast Ohio, NIN, Marilyn Manson (Canton) and The Black Keys (Akron) have all hit No. 1 since the start of the 21st century. The most recent NEO artist to accomplish the feat was rapper and Canton-native Trippie Redd, who appears on “Tickets to My Downfall,” just last year.
In case you’re wondering, it hasn’t been that long since an artist born in Cleveland topped the charts (MGK was actually born in Texas). Hip hop star DaBaby, who reached No. 1 earlier this year, was born in Cleveland but has lived in North Carolina since he was a pre-teen.
