Stephen T. Fletcher has become well-known in the art scene in the Southern Adirondacks and Utica area. His work is recognizable; a moody and whimsical reflection of the region, personal experiences, and society. Now the Forestport-based artist has released his first book, an illustrated narrative that chronicles a family’s journey through both joy and struggle.
“Wilderness Song” is an illustrated work of fiction based on regional and some national history set in the late 1800s. The work was inspired by Fletcher’s children Tommy and Cass.
“I used to read to them every weekend and decided at one point to write a little during the week and read to them over the weekend,” Fletcher said. “As the kids got a bit older they started to lose a bit of interest for our reading time and the story was shelved for many years. After the loss of my son Thomas to a drug overdose I decided to finish the story. Then came the idea to illustrate the story and try to have it published. It was at this time that it moved out of the children’s story neighborhood and into a more adult targeted book.”
The book contains 30 oil painting illustrations. Books will be printed on demand and can be ordered at wildernesssong.com.
More of Fletcher’s art can be viewed on Facebook at The Art of Stephen T. Fletcher and prints can be ordered at fletcherartwork.com.
“Wilderness Song” is dedicated to the loving memory of Fletcher’s son, Thomas J. Fletcher.
While growing up, Fletcher spent summers in the Adirondack Mountains. Fletcher studied Commercial Art, Advertising and Design and attended Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute for fine arts. At Munson Williams Proctor he learned technique and color theory. After attending, he taught classes for several years before moving on to individual studies. Fletcher then delved deep into the design, color, and theory of such artists as Rembrandt, Hopper, Frederick Church, Thomas Cole, Salvador Dali and many more, subsequently refining his own visual and conceptual vocabulary of style, contrast, color, and sense of place and time.
“It seems as long as I have been involved in the arts, I have been chasing the mysteries of light and shadow,” Fletcher said. “Light has always intrigued me in the way it lands, bends and reflects on water, objects, animals and people. In my paintings I incorporate mood as well as a sense of place and time in contrasting shapes, colors, light and shadow. Ever since I was young I have had a fascination with the Adirondack region and its inhabitants. Therefore many of my works involve the many subjects within.”
His work has won several awards throughout the years. Pieces can be found in numerous exhibitions and a myriad of public places and private art collections both in the United States and abroad.
“In each piece I like to tell a tale in which the viewer can develop their own story,” he said. “I work within my moods. My paintings may reflect my political views, regional assumptions, religion or anything that piques my imagination. I like to reflect the sad, heartfelt, sarcastic, tragic, disturbing and sometimes humorous life and times in the mountains. I sincerely hope that in viewing my work, each person can bring away with them a feeling and a mental image of a tale that effected them in some way.”
