LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- As a muralist and graffitist, one could say Lakewood artist Bob Peck’s lifelong mission was to add more art into public spaces.

Such a lofty goal jives perfectly with his hometown’s relatively new Spectacular Vernacular program, which in 2019 identified roughly half a dozen potential permanent and temporary art installations around the community.

That’s what made Peck a perfect applicant for the program. In July he completed the Spectacular Vernacular mural at 14322 Madison Avenue.

“I love Lakewood, so the icing on the cake was getting selected to be one of the Spectacular Vernacular artists,” said Cleveland native Peck, who has lived in Lakewood for two years.

“I like to paint a new public wall once a year. It’s like a personal project of mine. So I submitted my mock up and it all fell into place. Quite honestly, I was going to paint a wall in the city regardless. I just love to paint.”

Spectacular Vernacular applications were ranked by a resident-led selection panel based on strategic goals of the public art program. The criteria included increasing visibility and connections to public art in communities across the city and building capacity of the local creative workforce.

“One of the elements of Bob’s application that stood out from others was his consideration of a public celebration in light of COVID-19,” Lakewood Urban Designer Allison Hennie said.

“Bob created a video documenting the mural-making process and showing footage of pedestrians and apartment residents showcasing the importance of place within Lakewood resident’s daily lives.”

Peck was awarded a $1,600 Spectacular Vernacular grant to complete the mural, which so far is getting described as being bird-like due to its wing-like appearance.

“With any of my large-scale murals, there’s not so much a subject matter,” Peck said. "It’s more about an energy that comes from it. When I drew that piece up, I found a focal point where it explodes out of that.

“What I wanted to create was really just something when you see it, it kind of bursts at you. I want to have that feeling where you caught a moment in time of it actually kind of moving or exploding or expanding.”
