A local man dressed as Superman has been running around the streets of San Antonio with a huge "Vote!" flag to encourage the community to be a hero and hit the polls.
Since early voting started Oct. 13, David Alcantar, 42, has been running about 3 miles a day in local neighborhoods and at election sites across the city for his ongoing "The Superman Project," which launched after the 2016 election.
"The primary focus is to get people to get out and vote," he said. "But, if I'm David and tell you to vote, not very many people will respond. But, if Superman says it, I'm willing to bet you will be more motivated to do it."
Alcantar's Superman project first started as a series of drawings of superheroes he used to relate to political issues. He later added the physical aspect to his project, calling his exercise efforts "The American."
"This piece, 'The American,' is encouraging people to be active participants in guiding their destinies," he said. "Each of us can be heroic if we are willing to act in service of others, and voting for policymakers who are in service of others is a small and easy way to be a hero."
The local artist said he focused on Superman in his project because the superhero is loved by many.
"His history is a chock-full of political issues that he has to deal with," Alcanta said. "And over the years, because he's America's champion and because we all claim him, we mostly agreed with him, even if the way he's dealt with it has not been very good. He's a character written by humans, who also have flaws and make mistakes."
On Election Day, Alcantar said he ran about 7 miles. He plans to continue with his performance art pieces for future elections.
