March started strong, and this month filled with many people acknowledging the past, specifically women’s accomplishments. Music shaped the women’s movement for years, from iconic musicians like Cher and Tina Turner to more mainstream singers and songwriters. Last year was an excellent year for women in music with Ariana Grande’s latest album “Positions” breaking streaming records to SZA doing well with her singles “Good Days” and “Hit Different,” music is continuing to be dominated by women. With so many artists to choose from, here’s a few that I think should be on everyone’s playlist.
1: Victoria Monet
Monet released music from 2014 to the present day and built her sound as an R&B artist. Having close ties and writing credits under many other artists such as friend Ariana Grande, and even helping write for k-pop girl group Blackpink, Monet built a lengthy discography of songs with her name attached to them. Her most recent album, titled “Jaguar,” is a true culmination of her sound growing and shows off a more sexy side to R&B music.
2: Van Jess
With sisters Ivana and Jessica Nwokike, this powerhouse duo appears on Spotify as putting ” a 90’s inspired twist on their soulful sound”. The sisters made music since 2015 but took off with their single “Touch the Floor,” featuring jazz artist Masego and toured with him in early 2018. The duo recently released their album titled “Homegrown” in February 2021. The album is full of synthesized beats, electric guitar riffs, and an excellent saxophone accompaniment to many of their songs. My favorite on this album is “Slow Down” because their voices intertwine with the background’s saxophone.

3: Citizen Queen
These five girls could be your new favorite trendsetters for those who love acapella or girl groups. The group consists of bass singer Kaedi Dalley, mezzo soprano Hannah Mrozak, beatboxer Cora Isabel, soprano Nina Nelson, and alto Kaylah Sharve. Citizen Queen is unique because they tend to rely more on their voices rather than singing along to a beat, and they do it very well. It started with the girls doing covers on YouTube, touring with popular acapella group Pentatonix, and have now released two of their original songs titled “Call me Queen” and “No Ego.” Both pieces give a boost of confidence and even have choreography to go along with their infectious sound.
4: Chung-ha
Having started in the girl group I.O.I to now being a solo artist, Chungha made a name for herself amongst k-pop idols. She released countless songs since 2016 and proved she was here to stay after placing in the intense Korean music competition show, Produce 101. Chungha debuted as a solo artist in 2018. In a short amount of time, she made music as a solo artist and put out many chart topping songs such as “Gotta Go” and “Rollercoaster.” Chungha brings a nice mix of pop and R&B into k-pop and has shown that in her latest album, “Querencia,” which has 21 songs and has to be one of the best albums of 2021 so far. It split into multiple “sides,” each with a different vibe, but somehow it all ties together and makes for a great listen straight through.
5: Naïka
Born in Miami, Florida, but having solid influences on European, African, and Caribbean culture, Naïka makes vibrant music. After going viral on TikTok for her remix of the famous “Don’t Rush” song, people discovered more about her, and I was one of those people. After looking into the few singles she has out, her music is rich in different sounds and versatile. While most would categorize her music as pop with song some R&B influences, I feel her style is her own, and listening to her songs is the only way to see that. Her music’s rhythms are stylistic and take a different approach than mainstream pop, which one of her more recent singles titled “African Sun” demonstrates. Be prepared to be taken on a cultural journey with her music.
All of these artists’ music appear on Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms.
