Joel Damon, a curator, artist and designer from Nebraska, will present the Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Lecture at 5:30 p.m. March 31 via Zoom. His lecture is presented by the School of Art, Art History and Design.
The talk is free and open to the public. Access the lecture here.
Since 2014, Damon’s art practice has evolved from painting and installation to one of service. He co-founded Project Project in South Omaha as a space of freedom and experimentation for regional artists and to test the limits and longevity of an active arts space where money is not a driving force and donors have no say in what is exhibited.
Project Project has an all-volunteer staff and opens a new visual art exhibition each month, and hosts concerts, lectures and performances, all free of charge for the public. It also provides free studio space for local artists.
As a designer, Damon makes his money in the corporate setting. He also creates work for all Project Project events as well as local concerts and arts events. In 2018 he co-founded a now national network of volunteers that serves minority communities and businesses across the country through design, photography, editing and resume building, all free of charge to the clients.
The remaining spring schedule for the Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series includes:
• April 7: Noel Anderson, printmaking, 5:30 p.m. Anderson is area head of printmaking in New York University’s Steinhardt Department of Art and Art Professions. Anderson utilizes print-media and arts-based-research to explore philosophical inquiry methodologies.
• April 14: Kristian Bjornard, foundations, 5:30 p.m. Bjornard is a designer, educator and sustainabilitist. He is the director of The Office of Kristian Bjornard, a graphic design practice focusing on books, identities, websites and digital tools.
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Art, Art History and Design’s Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture Series brings notable artists, scholars and designers to Nebraska each semester to enhance the education of students.
Underwritten by the Hixson-Lied Endowment with additional support from other sources, the series enriches the culture of the state by providing a way for Nebraskans to interact with luminaries in the fields of art, art history and design.
For more information on the series, contact the School of Art, Art History and Design at (402) 472-5522.
