A total of 616 students have been nominated by teachers and private instructors from 72 Orange County high schools and arts organizations for The Orange County Register’s Artist of the Year program, now in its eighth year.
In this year of online and hybrid learning, teaching arts classes has been especially challenging. Not only have teachers had to reimagine their lessons for online and socially distant learning, but keeping students interested and engaged when they cannot perform together, or create in an art studio, has added extra layers of complexity.
Within each discipline — theater, dance, film, vocal music, instrumental music, computer-assisted visual arts and handcrafted visual arts — students have been nominated in specific specialties that highlight the area of the discipline in which they are the most accomplished. For instance, in theater, a student may be nominated in either acting, musical theater performance or theatrical design.
Following this initial nomination, a panel of arts educators narrow down the list and choose semi-finalists to move on to a round of in-person interviews. The semi-finalists will be announced on Sundays beginning April 11. The top Artist of the Year for each discipline and finalists in each specialty will be announced May 2.
This program is able to continue through 2022 thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Chapman University College of Performing Arts. Chapman has committed $25,000 a year, $75,000 total, for general operating expenses.
“The faculty and staff at Chapman University College of the Performing Arts are grateful that the Artist of the Year program can continue in 2021,” said Giulio M. Ongaro, dean of Chapman’s College of Performing Arts. “The past year has been very difficult for the performing arts in general, but we are all looking forward to signs like this, something that points to the arts roaring back and delighting and inspiring audiences once again. Orange County has many talented young artists and our faculty love serving as judges and helping the artists with constructive feedback, which will be invaluable to them. This is a high-quality program and I am happy we can support it.”
In addition, the Laguna College of Art and Design is providing $250 to each of the top seven students and will also offer a $2,500 scholarship to any finalist in the visual arts or animation specialties who plan to attend LCAD.
“The staff and faculty at LCAD are very excited to support the Artist of the Year program again this year,” said Hélène Garrison, provost and chief operations officer of LCAD.
“LCAD has always been dedicated to mentoring and supporting high-school aged, artistically-minded students and playing a significant role in their journey to becoming creative leaders. Supporting them locally, here in our own backyard, makes it even more special for us.”
