Taylor Swift has just been named the winner of the Album of the Year Grammy once again, which is still largely considered to be the biggest honor in the music industry by many. This isn’t the first time she’s taken home the top prize, and by snagging the trophy, she’s made history.
Swift is just the fourth artist to win Album of the Year three times, and she’s the first woman to do so. The country, pop and alternative singer-songwriter joins Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon in this exclusive club.
The “Cardigan” singer first came out on top in the Album of the Year category in 2010 with Fearless, her sophomore full-length. That year, her win was something of a surprise, as she beat out incredibly successful titles by the likes of Lady Gaga, the Black Eyed Peas, Dave Matthews Band and Beyoncé (who still has somehow never won this vertical).
She won her second Album of the Year prize six years later with 1989, which saw her pivot from the country sound that made her a household name to pure pop. That title produced a trio of No. 1 hits, and while it was pitted against deserving records by Chris Stapleton, Alabama Shakes, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar (whose To Pimp a Butterfly was named the deserving winning by many), the title was just too big to beat.
Swift was also nominated for Album of the Year one other time in 2014 for her album Red. That year, she was up against Sara Bareilles, Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, but they all ended up losing to Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories.
Swift made history less than a decade ago when she became the first woman to win Album of the Year twice, though she didn’t hold that distinction for long. Just one year after she collected her second prize, Adele followed in her footsteps when 25 gave the British powerhouse a second win, as she’d previously been named the champion for her giant seller 21.
Sinatra became the first musician to win a third Album of the Year Grammy in 1967, less than 10 years after the Recording Academy initiated what would quickly become music’s biggest night. His wins include Come Dance with Me! (1960), September of My Years (1966) and A Man and His Music (1967).
The following decade, Stevie Wonder replicated Sinatra’s success, and he almost won three Album of the Year Grammys in a row. The pianist, singer and songwriter earned the prize for his releases Innervisions (1974), Fulfillingness' First Finale (1975) and Songs in the Key of Life (1977).
Until tonight, Paul Simon was the latest artist to win Album of the Year at the Grammys three times, a feat he managed thanks to his output both with Simon & Garfunkel and on his own. He first snagged the trophy as a member of the duo for their beloved collection Bridge over Troubled Water (1971). He then went on to claim the honor twice as a solo act with both Still Crazy After All These Years (1976) and Graceland (1987).
In addition to the aforementioned artists, a number of producers, mixers and engineers, who all take home a prize for the albums they worked on if the chart-topping names are called, have at least three of these Grammys sitting on their shelves. Behind-the-scenes professionals like David Foster, Bob Ludwig, Tom Elmhirst, Ryan Tedder and Phil Ramone all have at least a trio of Album of the Year gramophones.
