Shauna Blake, who paints in a variety of mediums, will led a virtual hands-on watercolor art demonstration for the Batavia Society of Artists on Tuesday.
The program begins at 7 p.m. on the Zoom video conferencing platform.
Society of Artists members will get an email with sign-in information. There is a $5 fee for non-members to participant. Non-members will need to go to the Society of Artists Facebook page, facebook.com/bataviasocietyofartists, to sign up.
Blake started painting in her early teens and has devoted her entire working like to art. She has a love for nature and the outdoors and uses the inspiration and energy it provides to create her art.
In addition to watercolors, Blake works in acrylics, pen-and-ink, and silk dyes.
Blake, a Batavia native, graduated in 1994 from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a major in graphic design and illustration. She worked in the graphic design field for seven years before joining her husband, Brendan, in his glass art business in 2001. Here, she expanded her art by studying and creating lampwork glass beads.
Blake sells her hand-painted silk scarves, silk ribbons and art prints on her website, www.quintessencesilk.com, and on the popular Etsy handmade crafts site online.
Blake is a member of the Society of Artists and a past president. She has exhibited her work in the organization’s shows. She has received several awards in its members exhibition, most recently an honorable mention at the Society’s Members Winter Show in December 2019 for a dye on silk piece called “Autumn Lake.”
Blake has also shared her talents in previous demonstrations for the Society of Artists. In 2018, she demonstrated a technique called acrylic pouring in which she literally pours paint onto a surface and tilts the object to use gravity to create an abstract image. She not only uses the method to create paintings, but also one-of-a-kind jewelry.
She also demonstrated silk painting techniques for the Society of Artists.
For Blake’s upcoming watercolor demonstration, participants will need watercolors, watercolor brushes – Blake says she uses mostly “Rounds,” size 4, 6 and 8, watercolor paper, a board or plastic mat to tape watercolor paper down, masking tape, and a pencil.
