When we announced our 2021 Next Wave class of designers to watch, we wanted to capture the spirit of each up-and-coming studio with expressive, personalized portraits, as a big part of telling their stories was shaped by visual representations. And rather than simply snap a headshot, we decided to commission an artist whose creative talents aligned with our Next Wavers. Enter NV Illustration, an Ahmedabad, India-based art duo that works exclusively in a somewhat surprising medium: Paper.
What makes it so surprising? The results are miniature, hyper-intricate renditions of their subjects, all accomplished with a pair of scissors, paper, and some watercolor paint. Nayan, one of half of the artist duo, is a furniture and interior designer, while the other half, Vaishali, is a visual effects artist. Though they both pursued Arts & Design degrees, their careers together began in a totally different direction. Ahead, learn about their backgrounds that led them here and get inspired by their impressive creative process.
Where It All Started
Nayan and Vaishali met while working together as miniature model makers, which may explain their attention to detail, no matter how small. After a year of working together, they decided to launch their own studio, NV Illustration. "Our focus was on making miniature hand-painted Paper cut artworks and dioramas inspired by nature around us," they explain. "We wanted to spread awareness through our art."
How It's Done
If you're wondering how they actually bring these pieces to life, you may be surprised to hear that they don't actually use any kind of magnifying tools. "All the artworks are entirely hand-cut and hand-painted with watercolors," they explain. "Each layer is precisely hand-cut on paper and hand-painted, after which they are assembled together to get the final look." Their tiniest projects only measure a whopping 1.8 centimeters (just about three quarters of an inch!) in height.
How They Found Their Medium
"We love working with paper because of its amazing ability to create complex artworks with utter simplicity," they say. Plus, the textured element of layered paper lends itself to playing with depth and creates an undeniable sense of beauty and movement, especially when painted.
"Paper as a medium is very versatile in nature and working with paper allows you to create artworks in many different styles, from a painting to sketch to a sculpture," says the duo. "You can create everything with paper." Not to mention, it's both flexible and strong, making it a perfect fit for the end product they aim to make.
Standout Projects
When we asked them about their most memorable projects, the duo had two favorites. "They both are very different visually but the process and experience is similar," they say. One of them is a "self-initiated 1000 days of miniature art project which we started in 2018 and made an artwork every day for 1000 days. We took up a challenge of creating miniature birds and animals using paper and watercolors every day on 1st January 2018 and hadn't stopped since," the pair shares.
Not only did the commitment and habitual nature of the project help them hone their craft, but it also allowed them to make space for it. "The concept of these miniatures is to express the intricacy and beauty of nature around us through art and information. We used the technique of layered paper cutting to give a volume to the artworks which give them a three-dimensional feel."
Their other favorite? The one they collaborated with us on, of course. "The whole process of creating these amazing designers in their own unique style was a big challenge," they say. "Each character was different. It really helped us a lot in understanding the importance of art in interior design."
Their Personal Style
As artists, they feel they are responsible for bringing soul into every space. This is reflected in the art they make. They want their audience to experience the details and intricacies they may otherwise overlook but actually play a large role in shaping the space and giving it depth. Bottom line, our art adds to the feeling of an interior design scheme and makes the viewer experience the beauty of nature while at home.
