Abandoning any planning process might not sound like a good idea, but that’s exactly what Homestead Councilman Stephen Shelley’s Artist in the Spotlight, Terre Rybovich, says
allows her to draw stunning images she could never have imagined.
Rybovich was honored at the June Council Meeting, where she explained her process. She staples a large piece of paper to a sheet of plywood, then scrubs the entire surface with a thick stick of charcoal. Then she works spontaneously to imprint her hands, limbs and torso in the charcoal. It is those marks that determine how her piece progresses.
“I’m excited to reignite the Artist in the Spotlight Program now that things are returning back to normal,” said Councilman Shelley. “I encourage everyone who’s interested in seeing these beautiful pieces of art to come out to the Seminole Theatre and help support our local artists.”
Rybovich’s drawings are currently on display at the Seminole Theatre lobby, located at 18 N. Krome Ave., Homestead, FL 33030. There will also be a Gallery Night Reception at the Theatre on Thursday, June 24, 2021 from 6pm until 8pm.
About Terre Rybovich
Terre earned her Bachelors in Politics and Economics from New York University. She has a Masters in Rural Sociology from Wisconsin-Madison. Her first career was in grant-making to community and agricultural development.
Since becoming a serious birder, she sometimes includes birds she photographed in her drawings because they represent liberty and the beauty that surrounds us. The greatest influence on her creative practice is her father, Tommie Rybovich, a sports-fishing boat designer and builder who achieved international fame for his innovative designs.
Today Terre lives in Homestead with her husband Jon Ward. Her drawings have been exhibited widely in South Florida; they are in private and public collections.
About the Artist in the Spotlight Program
The Artist in the Spotlight program was created in 2010 by Councilman Stephen Shelley to highlight the talents of local artists and allow them to showcase their artwork to the local community. If you are interested in participating or know of a local artist in the area from Broward, Dade or Monroe Counties, please contact Councilman Shelley’s office at (305) 224-4433 or mwells@cityofhomestead.com. Artists who live in or near the City of Homestead will be given preference.
