After a year of social distancing, sickness and lost hope, Connie Brown decided she wanted to bring color into a time of darkness.
After taking a pottery class with instructor Tammy Troyer, Brown noticed a set of newspaper boxes sitting in a corner. She questioned Troyer, who mentioned it was a part of an upcoming art exhibit in Newnan. The boxes were to be decorated and then put out on display across Newnan.
This idea intrigued her. She immediately called her husband to help her put the box in the back of her car.
When she brought it home, she was unsure of what she wanted to do. “I set the box in my garage while I thought,” said Brown. “The one thing I did know is I wanted my box to be colorful and bright and have a message based on hope.”
Brown turned to the Bible. “I believe that God has a plan for our lives,” she said. “That’s why I decided to paint my box based on scripture. I think it is especially encouraging in times of struggle.”
She began painting. She wanted each side of the newspaper box to display a different message. The result exhibited bright colors and themes of good news, joy and sunshine. Another side is based on the “fruit of the spirit.”
“I think COVID was a hard time for everybody,” said Brown. “I survived it, but I lost my part-time job and my volunteer position. It was minor, but I know a lot of people had a more difficult time than I did. I wanted to express that there is hope.”
Art brought Brown much joy in a time of sadness. “Art for me is enjoyable, and it’s therapy,” she said. “Just to get your hands in the middle of creating something – it’s very therapeutic.”
Brown has been creating art since she was in grade school. She has always been involved in art throughout the years. During the quarantine, she returned to her passion. She said hopes that others will find joy in her art as much as she enjoys creating it.
