The Otter Tail River and his own yard during the pandemic were the inspiration for paintings by Fergus Falls artist Kim Embretson, whose collection of works entitled “My Yard 2020” and “Otter Tail River Project” will be on display in Waage Theatre at M State in Fergus Falls through Friday, Dec. 17.
Embretson, a student of M State art instructor John Charles Cox, said the pandemic was a motivation to “stay home and pay attention to the detail of my life for my creative adventures.”
“Staying home and paying attention to views from my yard has given me an appreciation of the small joys that surround me each day,” he said.
As a Fergus Falls resident since 2002 and a native of Hastings, at the confluence of the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers, Embretson’s fascination with moving water was inspiration for his Otter Tail River Project.
“The scenes I choose to portray can only be viewed by getting out of my car and approaching the river on foot,” he said. “My paintings are intended to inspire people seeking the beauty of the river and cherish the ancient river that continues to shape our landscape and lives.”
Embretson said he has been inspired by local artist and long-time M State art instructor Charles Beck, who painted what he knew best – scenes around Fergus Falls.
An artist’s reception for Embretson is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. The show is free and open to the public.
