FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) -- Fort Wayne has another reason to celebrate this year as "The Voice" returns on NBC.
Fort Wayne artist Samuel Harness appeared on the show Tuesday and convinced three of the judges to turn their chairs to try and convince him to join their team. He sang a unique version of the 3 Doors Down song, "Here Without You."
He follows in the footsteps of other Fort Wayne stars who have found success on the show including Addison Agen, Keegen Ferrell, and Christiana Danielle.
"That was absolutely phenomenal," Ariana Grande said after his performance. "You have such an incredible, unique voice." She then asked him if he sings country songs. Harness said no. Instead, he said his influences include Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran. Blake Shelton pointed out he is the returning champion as he tried to sway Harness to pick Team Blake.
Harness opted to be on John Legend's team. "It's a really powerful thing as an audience member to have an artist emote like that," Legend said. "You will be a magical addition to Team Legend."
Harness is 26-years-old and has a four-year-old son. "To love unconditionally is something that my son has taught me. That's why I'm so thankful for my adoptive parents to be able to run back to their arms and say thank you for everything you've done," he says.
During his debut on the show, he also described how he struggled with identity as he grew up in Indiana. He reached out and met his birth mother when he was 18-years-old. "It was very needed," he says. "It gave me a sense of understanding."
He says he turned to music as a form of therapy as he struggled with identity. He also learned a lot from his dad who is in a bluegrass group called, The Harness Family Band.
