The Old Town Art Gallery is showcasing the work of featured artist Gale Schnurman and guest artist Peggy Ho. The gallery is located at 417 Second St., Suite 102, Eureka.

Schnurman is a paper artist who lives in Eureka with her boyfriend and their dogs. Specializing in quilling, Schurman draws on wildlife, landscapes and portraits for inspiration to create dimensional art and jewelry.

Quilling is a technique of folding and manipulating strips of paper to create decorative designs. Each strip of paper is cut, shaped and carefully placed to create beautiful works of art. Quilled pieces can have hundreds of strips of paper in their designs. Quilling was founded by nuns in the 15th century to adorn religious objects, it was then taken up by ladies of leisure as a creative pastime. Quilling has made a comeback and Schnurman is thrilled to have stumbled upon the art form and make it her own.

Schnurman’s artwork is displayed at Old Town Art Gallery and has been a fixture in several businesses throughout the Eureka area.

Ho was born and lived for six years in Taipei, Taiwan. Her ancestors include a famous poet, sculptor and opera singer/actress. Ho became interested in art in college and was first drawn to throwing pots, especially the meditative qualities of that work. Later, she fell in love with figure sculpting which shared the three-dimensional nature of pottery but was more expressive.

Ho studied ceramics and won the Stillwell Collection award for best graphic design. She has also studied watercolor, acrylics and oil painting, filmmaking and photography. At this point in her life, Ho is focusing on photography as her medium. In addition to her long-standing fascination with Georgia O’Keefe, her photography is influenced by her many years of living in Hawaii, over 20 years in Berkeley and the last seven years in Humboldt County.

Ho’s work is also influenced by Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings on the importance of a daily practice, which includes experiences in nature. Her photographs capture moments of nature’s beauty, which remind people to stay present to even the smallest gifts of beauty that are given to people every day, if they just take the time to notice.

Ho’s art is displayed at Blondies’ Cafe and Moonrise Herbs in Arcata and the Art Center and Old Town Art Gallery in Eureka. For more information, go to ArtPal.com/PeggyHo.
