FAIRMONT– Next week the Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont will host its first artist-in-residence. Fred Keller will assist with programs at the Red Rock and also be out in the community putting on a number of free public performances. Red Rock Director, Sonja Fortune, said that they received some extra support from the Minnesota State Arts Board coming out of Covid. Last year the Red Rock used the money received to fund the mural painted on the side of 5 Crazy Ladies in the 400 block of Downtown Plaza. This year, Fortune said they decided to bring in Fred Keller for a week. Keller is a folk musician in a band called SkallyLine. He’s also a historian. The tagline Fortune is using for the week is “Bringing stories of Minnesota’s history to life through music.” One of the things Keller will do while here is assist with the week-long music and arts camp, which the Red Rock is putting on for the second year. The camp is for students entering 1st through 6th grade. It will run next week from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fortune said that some of the camp counselors thought it would be nice to bring in someone from the outside to collaborate. “He will be with camp kids in the morning and then we’re sending him out into the community to do some free concerts and talks with different organizations,” Fortune said. On Monday Keller will be entertaining residents at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center. On Tuesday, he’ll have his first public appearance at noon during the Red Rock’s Lunch with the Arts program. Later in the day, at 4 p.m., he’ll be doing a storytelling and songs with kids on the green space outside the Red Rock. “Wednesday at 2 p.m. he’ll be at the (Pioneer) museum doing a coffee chat,” Fortune said. She said that Director Lenny Tvedten has invited people who are supporters of the museum and interested in history to that. Fortune reached out to some businesses and was pleased to receive expressed interest from many who were eager to have Keller come in. At 5 p.m. on Wednesday evening Keller will be holding a mini concert at Fairmont Brewing Company on Downtown Plaza. At 3 p.m. on Thursday he’ll hold a mini concert at Graffiti Corner. “Every concert will be a little different so people can go to one or all of them because they’re all going to be different,” Fortune said. Keller’s final performance for the week will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Park. “We’re utilizing different parks this summer to show off their beauty. The bandshell is a wonderful place for performers, but it’s nice to bring in musicians and do gatherings at our other parks,” Fortune said. The concert is titled “Fred & Friends,” as two other musicians will be joining Keller for a full-fledged concert in the park. The Red Rock really started holding outdoor concerts and events during Covid and Fortune said that it was well-received, which prompted them to want to continue holding events outdoors. Fortune said she hopes that people enjoy the mix of music, storytelling and history at different venues throughout the week. “We feel that community outreach is important. These are free events and don’t limit anybody from enjoying the arts and music,” Fortune said. She noted that there are still many people who haven’t been in the Red Rock Center or know what it all has to offer. She hopes having musicians out in the community will help reach more people. “There is so much to do in Fairmont. You hear all of the time, ‘there’s nothing to do.’ We have beautiful parks and lakes, community art centers. There’s so much here and so many places to do it,” Fortune said. Fortune said that today is the last day to resister for the music and arts summer camp. Anyone who is interested can contact the Red Rock Center at 235-9262.
